Bailey Falter
Bailey Falter Runs up pitch count Wednesday
Wed, May 14, 2025, 10:40 PM
Falter did not factor into Wednesday's decision against the Mets, allowing three hits and five walks while striking out three across 3.2 scoreless innings.
Analysis: Falter was able to keep the Mets off the board, but he allowed eight baserunners and ran his pitch count up to 78 (41 strikes) before being lifted for Chase Shugart in the fourth inning. It was the first time in nine starts this season that Falter didn't make it out of the fourth frame, but he has yielded just one earned run over his last three starts. He's in line to start against the Reds at home next week.
Ke'Bryan Hayes
Ke'Bryan Hayes Absent from Wednesday's lineup
Wed, May 14, 2025, 5:04 PM
Hayes is not in the Pirates' starting lineup against the Mets on Wednesday.
Analysis: Hayes has five multi-hit games since the beginning of May and has gone 14-for-48 (.292) with two stolen bases and two RBI over that span. He'll begin Wednesday's game in the dugout while Jared Triolo starts at the hot corner and bats ninth.
Oneil Cruz
Oneil Cruz Out of Wednesday's lineup
Wed, May 14, 2025, 5:01 PM
Cruz (back) is not in the Pirates' starting lineup against the Mets on Wednesday.
Analysis: Cruz is out of the lineup for a fourth consecutive game due to back soreness that flared up during Saturday's extra-innings loss to Atlanta. The Pirates have a day off Thursday, so Cruz will have additional time to rest ahead of Friday's series opener against the Phillies. Alexander Canario, Ji Hwan Bae and Bryan Reynolds will man the outfield for Pittsburgh on Wednesday.
Endy Rodriguez
Endy Rodriguez Set to begin rehab assignment
Wed, May 14, 2025, 2:04 PM
Rodriguez (finger) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday.
Analysis: Rodriguez has been shelved for the past month with a laceration on his right index finger but has been cleared to test himself in a game setting. The switch hitter shouldn't require too many at-bats in the minors before being activated from the 10-day injured list.
Enmanuel Valdez
Enmanuel Valdez Moved to 60-day IL
Wed, May 14, 2025, 2:02 PM
The Pirates transferred Valdez (shoulder) from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Wednesday.
Analysis: The transaction clears room on the 40-man roster for waiver pickup Michael Helman and ensures that Valdez won't be available for the big club until around the All-Star break. The Pirates initially deactivated Valdez on May 9 due to left shoulder inflammation, but his move to the 60-day IL could suggest that he's dealing with a more significant injury. Before getting injured, Valdez had been seeing regular reps at first base, but playing time could be difficult to come by for him once he's activated since Spencer Horwitz (wrist) is poised to beat him back from the IL.
Michael Helman
Michael Helman Claimed by Pirates
Wed, May 14, 2025, 1:59 PM
The Pirates claimed Helman off waivers from the Cardinals on Wednesday.
Analysis: Helman will be assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis. The utility player has slashed only .185/.260/.292 over 18 games with Triple-A Memphis this season.
Ke'Bryan Hayes
Ke'Bryan Hayes Flashes wheels Tuesday
Wed, May 14, 2025, 7:22 AM
Hayes went 2-for-4 with a triple and a stolen base in Tuesday's 2-1 loss to the Mets.
Analysis: While the Pirates' overall offensive malaise prevented Hayes from adding any other fantasy-friendly stats to his ledger, he continues to be one of the most consistent hitters in the lineup. The third baseman hasn't gone consecutive games without a hit since mid-April, and over his last 22 contests he's slashing .310/.341/.356 with two steals and seven RBI, but somehow only one run scored.
Mitch Keller
Mitch Keller Gets little help again in loss
Wed, May 14, 2025, 7:19 AM
Keller (1-5) took the loss Tuesday as the Pirates fell 2-1 to the Mets, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk over seven innings. He struck out eight.
Analysis: The strikeouts were a season high for Keller, who delivered his second straight quality start and sixth of the campaign on 96 pitches (65 strikes), including 32 called or swinging strikes. The right-hander hasn't gotten into the win column since March 28 due to consistently poor offensive support -- the Bucs have scored only 15 runs combined in his last seven trips to the mound, a stretch in which he's posted a 3.40 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 35:11 K:BB over 42.1 innings. Keller lines up to make his next start at home early next week against the Reds.
Andrew McCutchen
Andrew McCutchen Idle Tuesday
Tue, May 13, 2025, 4:35 PM
McCutchen isn't in the lineup for Tuesday's game versus the Mets.
Analysis: McCutchen will start Tuesday's contest on the bench after going 1-for-3 with a walk during Monday's series opener. His absence will put Joey Bart into the DH spot while Henry Davis catches and bats ninth.
Oneil Cruz
Oneil Cruz Sitting again Tuesday
Tue, May 13, 2025, 4:32 PM
Cruz (back) isn't in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Mets.
Analysis: Tuesday will mark the third consecutive absence for Cruz due to his sore back. The Pirates haven't announced any plans to move him to the injured list, though that could change if the 26-year-old doesn't return within the next few days. Ji Hwan Bae will start in center field Tuesday and bat eighth.
Tommy Pham
Tommy Pham Sitting Tuesday
Tue, May 13, 2025, 4:25 PM
Pham isn't in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Mets.
Analysis: Pham served his one-game suspension Monday, but the Pirates will give him another day off Tuesday following his 1-for-10 stretch at the plate. Alexander Canario, Ji Hwan Bae and Bryan Reynolds will start across Pittsburgh's outfield while Pham rests.
Paul Skenes
Paul Skenes Gives up one run in no-decision
Mon, May 12, 2025, 10:03 PM
Skenes did not factor into the decision against the Mets on Monday, allowing one run on six hits and three walks while striking out six across six innings.
Analysis: Skenes was able to pitch himself out of trouble for most of the night, with his lone blemish coming in the fourth inning on a Jeff McNeil RBI double. Skenes generated nine whiffs and 16 first-pitch strikes on 92 pitches and managed to log his sixth quality start of the season. Across 54.2 innings this season, the 22-year-old ace has a 2.63 ERA and 1.01 WHIP, which rank seventh and fifth, respectively, in the National League among qualified starters. Skenes is slated to face the Phillies on the road this weekend.
Isiah Kiner-Falefa
Isiah Kiner-Falefa Belts home run in return
Mon, May 12, 2025, 9:55 PM
Kiner-Falefa went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Monday's 4-3 loss to the Mets.
Analysis: Kiner-Falefa slashed .302/.327/.377 with two stolen bases and three RBI in the 15 games prior to his stint on the 10-day injured list due to a right hamstring strain. He picked up where he left off Monday, smashing a solo home run to left-center field off David Peterson in the second frame. Kiner-Falefa added a single in the sixth frame to log his seventh multi-hit game of the season, and he has a career-best .704 OPS over 113 plate appearances this year.
Joey Bart
Joey Bart Serving as designated hitter
Mon, May 12, 2025, 4:47 PM
Bart is serving as the designated hitter and batting in the cleanup spot against the Mets on Monday.
Analysis: With Oneil Cruz (back) sidelined for a second straight game, Andrew McCutchen will move to the outfield, which opens the DH spot for Bart while Henry Davis starts behind home plate. Bart went 6-for-12 with three RBI during the Pirates' three-game weekend series against Atlanta.
Oneil Cruz
Oneil Cruz Remains out of lineup
Mon, May 12, 2025, 4:44 PM
Cruz (back) remains out of the lineup for Monday's game versus the Mets.
Analysis: Cruz will miss a second straight start after exiting Saturday' contest versus Atlanta with lower-back tightness. Alexander Canario will get another start in center field in place of Cruz, who is considered day-to-day.
Tommy Pham
Tommy Pham Serving suspension Monday
Mon, May 12, 2025, 4:22 PM
Pham will serve a one-game suspension Monday against the Mets stemming from an incident that occurred in an April 23 game against the Angels, Colin Beazley of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Pham had appealed the ban, which was handed down by MLB after he was deemed to have made inappropriate actions toward fans last month. It's not clear whether he's dropped the appeal or if the suspension was upheld, but either way, he will be unavailable for the Pirates in Monday's series opener.
Isiah Kiner-Falefa
Isiah Kiner-Falefa Reinstated from IL
Mon, May 12, 2025, 4:18 PM
The Pirates reinstated Kiner-Falefa (hamstring) from the 10-day injured list Monday.
Analysis: Kiner-Falefa was placed on the 10-day injured list May 1 due to a right hamstring strain. He quickly resumed baseball activities and was able to run the bases over the weekend, and he's recovered enough that a rehab assignment is not needed. Kiner-Falefa slashed .280/.333/.330 with six stolen bases and seven RBI prior to his injury, and he should be back in the Pirates' starting lineup against the Mets on Monday. Liover Peguero was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis in a corresponding move.
Liover Peguero
Liover Peguero Headed back to Triple-A
Mon, May 12, 2025, 4:10 PM
The Pirates optioned Peguero to Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday.
Analysis: He'll give up his spot on the Pirates' 26-man roster to infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa (hamstring), who was reinstated from the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move. After being called up from Triple-A on May 2, Peguero appeared in four games for Pittsburgh and went 2-for-9 with three strikeouts.
Ke'Bryan Hayes
Ke'Bryan Hayes Swipes fourth bag
Mon, May 12, 2025, 8:08 AM
Hayes went 2-for-5 with a run scored and a stolen base Sunday against Atlanta.
Analysis: Hayes hit atop the Pirates' order with Oneil Cruz (back) sidelined and lefty Chris Sale on the mound. He swiped his fourth stolen base of the season, his first since April 14 and only second since Opening Day. Overall, Hayes is hitting a decent .253 across 157 plate appearances, but he has just five extra-base hits.
Joey Bart
Joey Bart Strong weekend series
Mon, May 12, 2025, 8:03 AM
Bart went 2-for-5 with two RBI on Sunday against Atlanta.
Analysis: Bart went hitless in Friday's game against Atlanta but closed the series 6-for-12 with three RBI, serving as the catcher in all three contests. He has maintained a .291 average and .411 on-base percentage across 124 plate appearances this season, though he has only six extra-base hits.
